chess compositions are roughly divided in following groups:

* Direct mate problems, where the mate (or sometimes stalemate) is achieved in given number of moves.

* Studies, where win or draw is achieved in non-specified number of moves.

Both above are called orthodox compositions. In addition there are non-orthodox ie. fairy chess problems, which can either introduce new type of pieces or new rules or different targets for a composition. The last group includes the following, well established, genres:

* Helpmates, where (unless else stipulated) black begins and helps white to achieve the mate in given number of moves.

* Selfmates, where white forces black to mate in given number of moves.

* Reflexmates are selfmates, with a twist. Both white and black must mate if there is mate-in-one available on the board. This limits somewhat white, who must not to 'by reflex' mate black, and sometimes offers black unexpected defenses.

I will not go deeper into the fairy jungle this time nor will I handle retro - and mathematical chess problem genres.
